SBDP IS AUDITIONING!

Sarah Bush Dance Project is looking for 2 more female dancers to add to the cast of the ROCKED BY WOMEN show (and other projects). Weekly Bay Area rehearsals and paid local and short U.S. tours. Strong performers in any genre encouraged to apply.

Rocked By Women – Thank you!

The show was sold out. It went really well. Amazing dancers, sound score, video score, and supporting staff. Thank you to the “angel singers”, the “mom” stand-ins, the tech folks, the volunteers, QCC and AAACC staff.

There was a great panel after the show. Nova Brown moderated. Panelists: Carolyn Brandy, Page Hodel, Krissy Keefer and Holly Near. So wonderful to have these powerful women together. (See photo below)

We are taking a break from this show for the summer, but plan to stage it again in the Bay Area this fall. Then hopefully take it on the road to a few other cities.

Thanks for all you did to bring this show to life!

Interview with Sarah Bush about Rocked By Women

On a recent trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, I was fortunate to catch a dress rehearsal of the Sarah Bush Project Rocked by Women show. This multi-media dance performance is a tribute to the pioneers of women’s music, the music that Sarah Bush was raised on. Although her mom was straight, Sarah says she remembers dancing around the house to Meg Christian’s Leaping Lesbians as a child. Listening to Holly Near and Cris Williamson paved the way for her to come out as a lesbian at age 16. And all of them led her down her life’s path of being a working artist, a dancer and choreographer.

After the dance, I sat and talked with Sarah about the inspiration behind Rocked by Women. She says the combination of music and movement has the capacity to stir things in people. I agree. I was moved by music, her physical interpretation of it and the story it wove throughout her life. I was also moved by the passion and respect Sarah showed the musicians who played the soundtrack of her formative years. Listen in on my conversation with Sarah Bush and the Rocked by Women project.

Rocked by Women will play June 16, 2011 at 8pm in the African American Art and Culture Complex, San Francisco.

We are getting very close, and are nervous, frenzied, but mostly excited.
Sound score is finished, video score almost done, costumes bought, SBDP posters and t-shirts ready, last few rehearsals, panel being finalized (confirmed panelists so far include: Holly Near, Linda Tillery, Carolyn Brandy, Krissy Keefer, Page Hodel, Sarah Crowell and Myrna Johnston, others t.b.a.)
And we’ll be in the theater next week!

We would so love to see you at the show on June 16.
